Both of our winches have never been more popular and certainly they have a wealth of applications. While having a chat with a techie in the workshop, we speculated about how the winch first came about. We speculated that they were palpably medieval in it's origin. Louth isn't far from the majestic Lincoln Cathedral a miracle in stone from the twelfth century - you'd never be able to hoist that much in the way of worked sandstone without a winch. certainly they were used.
Beyond that, it was also in use in far more deadly fashion. Being dressed to the nines in plate armour like a typical Knight, you feel pretty safe, right? Not if the enemy had a crossbow! Winch mechanisms were used to ensure the crossbow darts could be released at tremendous power and were able to pierce even plate armour!

More Ancient Origins
Actually, the winch has its origins far further back in history, right into the depths of antiquity. Sandals and swords all the way, we're back to ancient Greece. Herodotus, the noted historian, geographer and traveller mentions them in his history of the Persian Wars, (Histories 7.36) in which he describes how they were used to raise and lower sections of a pontoon bridge that stretched across the Hellespont as long ago as 480B.C. Far older than you thought hey? It is probable the Assyrians also used winches and that this technology potentially reached them through their use in Egypt. Some things are lost to us through the course of history; we're unsure if 'The Big Book OF Egyptian Winches' burned in the decimation of the Library at Alexandria, or even if existed at all! Indian Jones and the Origin of the Modern Winch, anyone?
